Educated at: Castle Bromwich Primary School (1943-48) and Saltley Grammar School (1948-1956), Birmingham, U.K. Obtained passes in 6 GCE `O' level subjects and 3 `A' level subjects.

Studied Mathematics: At the University of Birmingham, U.K. 1956-1959. Awarded First Class Honours in Mathematics.

Ph.D. thesis title: Forced Convection Problems and Some Related Integral Equations of the First Kind . Supervised by A.F.Pillow and V.G.M.Hart. Degree approved in January 1972. (An abstract appeared in Bull. Austral. Math. Soc., 6, 1972, p.471)

The following routines have  been  contributed  to  the  Liverpool   Parallel library. They are written in Occam and the library is designed to run on transputer arrays and may be called from Fortran or C main procedures. The library will be marketed jointly by NAG and N.A.Software Ltd.

 

S1.  ie2nyst.REAL32.A routine to solve Fredholm integral equations  of  the second kind for continuous kernels and continuous driving term.

 

S2.  ie2simp.REAL32.      An easy to use version of  ie2nyst.REAL32  based  on  a quadrature approximation by Simpson's rule.

 

S3.  ie2lnsng.REAL32. A routine to solve Fredholm integral equations  of  the second kind with logarithmically singular kernels.

 

S4.  ie1lnsng.REAL32. A routine to solve Fredholm integral  equations  of  the first kind with logarithmically singular kernels.

 

S5.   quad_data.REAL32. A routine which returns  the  weights  and  points  for Newton-Cotes quadrature of order from 1 to 11, on the interval   (-1,1);  and for Gauss-Legendre quadrature of  orders   0,1,2,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,32,64   on the same interval.

 

S6.  ie1cl1.REAL32. A routine which solves Fredholm integral  equations  of the first kind with smooth kernels.

R6.   Notes on Smoothing, parts I - VI.  This is a series of reports submitted to N.A. Software Ltd. as part of a Ministry of  Defence  (U.K.)  contract  on  the enhancement  of  Radar  Images.  The  reports  include  software  for  the smoothing of two dimensional gridded data using tensor products  of  cubic splines.1987-1988.  Parts IV - VI  address  adaptive  knot  placement  and smoothing and least squares fitting  in  the  presence  of  non-negativity constraints

Organised the Research Project of The Week for the Univations pavilion at the World Expo.

 

Organised a meeting on Boundary  Integral  Methods  and the Numerical Solution of Integral  Equations.   This  was  partially funded by a grant from the  Australian  Mathematical  Society  Special Interest Meetings scheme. 

It was attended by  several  distinguished national and international researchers.

 

Gave an invited address ``Computers and Contemporary Mathematics'' to the Computers in Education Group of Queensland Annual Conference.
